CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) is a construction material of the future. Wood as a material is widely available around the world. It is a natural solid and stable material which is generated by nature so fast that people cannot use it up. 

A wooden house which will be disassembled after years of operation will not leave useless waste which now poses a serious threat to our civilization. Single components of such a building can be subject to recycling, which is a part of a sustainable development program. Cross laminated wood panels have numerous merits:  

They are exceptionally plastic:
They can serve to produce large-format boards up to 120000x2950. They can serve to produce boards in rare shapes. Structure is multi-layer and allows the production of panels with various applications: visual, acoustic and fireproof. They can be well combined with other construction materials.

Preparation time of particular wall barriers is exceptionally short, which translates into shorter time of waiting for a ready building. The assembly is fast and smooth. External and internal walls are substantially thinner than brick walls. It is estimated that saved space is 6-10% when compared to the traditional technology.

Structure and design

Technically every construction design can be adjusted to prefabrication technology. To be able to fully emphasize visual qualities and to use the technical capabilities of CLT timber, it is worth considering the purchase of an individual design. The fact that our house will be made of CLT solid timber is essential as early as at the stage of building designing. It will allow an architect to understand and use this technology and plan solutions better, rendering our house utterly unique. One of CLT merits is a possibility of treating the supporting structure as a visual surface. Wooden finishes of rooms provide totally new possibilities also to interior designers.

Traditional wood in a totally new image can be perfectly combined with modern materials, such as glass, concrete, and steel. It can also perfectly fit Scandinavian interiors which have been recently popular. To assure visual layer of the surface is intact, any systems shall be assembled inside the wall, whereas elements combinations are conducted from the outside.

Designing a CLT solid timber house, one should consider several aspects:

  • Board compression, tensile and bending strength on a plane and outside the plane;
  • Fire resistance;
  • Acoustic parameters;
  • Structure durability;
  • Short-term and long-term response;
    • Temporary deformation,
    • Long-standing resistance to a fixed loading,
    • Long-term deflection.


Production process:

  • Construction design analysis.
  • Adaptation of design to CLT solid timber system.
  • Panel production including as follows:
    • Grouping single LAMELA. Layers are arranged alternately with an angle of 900,
      which has an impact on increase of stability of ready elements.
    • Glue application between layers with highly precise and suitable distributed dosage. Glues used to produce CLT panels do not have solvents and formaldehydes. They are totally odorless and transparent when hardened.
    • Pressing layers, which leads to increase of endurance of ready panels.
    • Cutting ready boards in accord with the construction design and forming edges.
  • Control of element workmanship aiming to assure an investor that CLT ready products fit the intended solutions.
  • Specification of assembly procedure and marking particular structural elements.
  • Securing panels against weather conditions during transport.
  • Loading on a lorry/truck.
  • Developing a production documentation.
  • Transporting elements to the assembly venue. A means of transport is selected with regard to the format size of particular structural elements. Assembly is possible in difficult conditions. In locations which make it impossible to transport elements via a lorry/truck, we propose an assembly with use of a helicopter.


Joints in wooden structures also based on CLT timber play a vital role in maintaining the wood structure integrity. They also have an influence on stability and flexibility of the structure. Connecting occurs pointwise by means of a chipboard screws, nails, pins or bolts. Considering the multilayer nature of CLT panels, one has to assure a suitable position of joints and direction of applied connecting members.

Massive CLT panels are custom-made, and are proposed in individually selected formats applicable to a given construction design. At the panel production stage, elements combination is planned, as well as door and window openings are created. What’s more, individual details are considered, such as preparation for electric system, additional thermal and sound insulation. The panels are then transported to the construction site. Building structures are founded on suitably prepared and insulated foundation plate, and its assembly lasts only several hours. Thermal insulation is applied on external walls of the building. The final exterior appearance of the building is at the investor’s discretion. In this building one can apply any roofing. A house interior can be left in the CLT timber visual quality or apply drywalls which can then be finished. All systems are conducted in internal casings, and in the case of the so-called visual quality at the production stage, they are placed inside structural elements.
